A Personal View on Yesterday’s Market Sell-Off

I want to share my personal perspective on yesterday’s sharp sell-off in the U.S. and global stock markets.

Both political parties played a role in fostering yesterday’s market fluctuations. In recent years, our economy has led many people to view the stock market as their primary, or even sole, path to generating additional income. Robust equity markets play an indispensable role in developed economies, serving as a core distinction of transparency, public trust, and global influence, much like Wall Street represents America’s global financial leadership. At the same time, relying primarily on market appreciation for broader economic growth presents operational challenges that deserve thoughtful balancing. I am fully committed to supporting financial markets, and I believe true economic responsibility means giving equal dedication to real-world industrial development, which ultimately empowers the stock market over the long term.

A transparent, fair, and growing stock market is a cornerstone of a mature economy, and I fully understand and respect Wall Street's critical and indispensable role in raising capital and efficiently allocating resources. However, alongside strong equity markets, we must build a nation where people can also generate income through other reliable avenues, including international trade, local small businesses, entrepreneurship, and independent professional work. Small and medium-sized businesses across the country have been deeply unsettled by unpredictable tariff hikes. We need to restore confidence so that starting a business feels like a viable, safe, and rewarding option again, alongside essential stock trading opportunities. Small and mid-sized businesses serve as vital suppliers and customers to large corporations and technological innovators; they are the very soil that fuels corporate revenues and provides a solid foundation for the stock market to flourish. By creating a commercial environment that supports business endeavors and makes them more predictable, we strengthen the entire economic ecosystem.

I also want to address a common misconception: a Democratic-led Congress does not signal market weakness or a lack of financial expertise. The Democratic Party is filled with exceptional financial talent. Having helped drive a major market rally in China earlier this year, contributing to 13 consecutive days of gains, a historic best since 1992, that pushed the Shanghai Composite Index to the 4,000-point milestone, I deeply appreciate how market confidence works, and our party includes leaders with even greater financial depth. Our goal is simply to ensure economic strength exists not just on paper, in statistics, or in stock tickers, but tangibly in offline industries and daily lives. The stock market is a long-term journey rather than a short sprint, and a healthy real economy is what supports sustained, long-term market growth.

Our objective is not to hold back the market, but to ensure it rests on a solid foundation. When equity values and real-world industrial performance realign, brief market adjustments are a natural part of a healthy economic cycle. The market will eventually reach new highs through responsible, evidence-backed governance across all sectors. For young children, learning how to build a business by selling Girl Scout Cookies is just as valuable as learning how to trade stocks. Mastering both skills gives them a stronger, well-rounded foundation to navigate life’s ups and downs, economic shifts, and international changes.

Finally, market participants should view policy debates not as a sign of instability, but as the core strength of a healthy, democratic process. The Democratic Party encompasses a broad spectrum of perspectives, from moderate to progressive. While I may not agree with every member’s stance, I fiercely defend their right to speak. A dynamic party must never become a top-down monologue where people feel intimidated to express differing opinions. Having experienced environments where only a single official voice was permitted, I know firsthand how detrimental that can be to a society. When market participants hear differing opinions from various lawmakers, there is no need to overreact. Individual legislative statements represent diverse viewpoints within an open and valued debate, rather than finalized policy decisions to be implemented at scale. Every official strategy will be forged through rigorous, pragmatic discussion and evidence-based analysis aimed at long-term public interest and national stability.

We remain fully committed to supporting financial market growth, strengthening the real economy, and protecting the fundamental right to free speech.
